Valentino interested in fashion since he was a child. when he was 17 years old, he decided to move to Paris to pursue his dream desire of being an extraodinary designer. In Paris, he studied at Ecole dres Beaux-Arts and at Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. His first apprenticeship in Paris starts with Jean Dresses, Jacques Fath, Balenciaga and Guy Laroche, some of the best designers in the world. With that he quickly learned to be the best designer he could be. Not long after he made the esicion to make his own fashion house.

first fashion house of valentino
In 1959, Valentino left Paris and opened his first fashion house, “Valentino” after himself in Rome with the help of his father. His first fashion house was like a real “maison de couture” and it successfully made people more interested in his designs. Even the models decided to fly in from Paris to attend Valentino’s first fashion show. He then started to become popular and well-known for his red dresses as his trademark design, in the bright shade that became famous in the industry of fashion as “Valentino Red”.

In 1960, Valentino met Giancarlo who was in his second year of architecture school and they soon became long-lasting partners in the fashion business. Valentino’s International debut took place in 1962 in Florence which was known as the Italian fashion capital at that time. His first show was held at the Pitti Palace and was welcomed as a true revelation as a young couturier. There was also some enthusiastic comments given by the press. This is when the world started to take notice of Valentino’s designs.

Afterwards, He began dressing ladies of the international best-dressed crowd such as Jacqueline de Ribes, and also the New York socialites Babe Paley and Jayne Wrightsman. In September 1964, Valentino got the chance to be in the United States to present one of his collections at a charity ball at New York’s Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. He moved his shows from Florence to Rome in 1966.

He achieved one of his greatest triumphs in 1967 when he launched his White Collection. Taking a risk he used shades of white into all of his collection and succeded, making it a wild sucess. He acheived the Nieman Marcus award in design award for his stunning work. The “V” logo that he designed on his collection works became one of the sole reasons why it is famous. He also started designing his ready-to-wear collection in Milan and Rome.

For his fame, in the 1983 – 1985, the Ford Motor Company offered a Valentino Edition of its Continental Sedan. Jacqueline Kennedy who was a fashion icon at that time, became one of the avid clients of Valentino. He also got the chance to design her wedding dress at her wedding to Aristotle Onnasis in 1968. His designs then acheived iconic status among the crowd and during the eighties, he also launced the first Valentino childrenswear line and also the clothing for young adults which he named Oliver.

In 1989, Valentino expanded his empire with launching a boutique chain throughout United States and Japan. This is also the start where Valentino continue to design not only dresses but also ties, accessories, shirts and jeans. The main goal now is create luxurious clothing all over the world. He also opened the “Academie Valentino” in Rome. Academie Valentino is a cultural central to house art exhibitions and cultural activities.  9 years later, in 1998, Valentino sold his company to Holding di Partecipazioni Industriali (HdP) for $300 million and in 2002, HdP sold Valentino to the luxury group, Marzotto. But Valentino kept his position as the designer, as he is such a hugely influential figure.

On July 5 till 8, 2007 in Rome, There was a celebration of the 45th anniversary of Valentino’s career. The festivities started at thurday with a dinner for Valentino’s assistants and employees at Ristorante Gusto and ended on Sunday with the launch of a perfume fragrance line and a branch at the French Academy of Villa Medici.

At the end of 2011, The Valentino Garavani Virtual Museum was launced at www.valentino-garavani-archives.org serving as a authoritative resource for the life and works of Valentino. The major exhibition was opening at Somerset House in London celebrating the life and work of Valentino Garavani. It will showcase over 130 exquisite haute couture designs that were worn by iconic people such as Jackie Kennedy Onasss, Grace Kelly, Sophia Loren and also Gwyneth Paltrow in an exciting created installation.
